JASON scowled as he met Louise at the fifth floor lift door and showed her through to his boss’s office. He stood at the entrance, keeping watch. George directed her to a chair in front of his desk.

“You have something for me?” he said, clicking with his mouse, and then turning the computer screen away so he could give her his full attention.

“I have the plan,” said Louise. “But it’s not really something for an audience, no disrespect.” She looked back to Jason, who was standing silently, watching.

“I don’t have secrets here,” said George. “Don’t mind him.”

“But maybe I do have secrets.”

She hesitated, and eventually George nodded. Jason stepped back into the corridor, and closed the door behind him.

“Okay, but before I show it to you I still need to know more about you,” said Louise. “Who are you? What do you do? For all I know, you could be working undercover for the police.”

“I’m sure you’ve done your research on me.”

“I have. But that makes me even more suspicious. If the police turn a blind eye to you because you’re supplying information ...”

George stood up, and moved round to the front of his desk.

“I assure you, there’s nothing for you to worry about,” he said, reaching out for the folder she’d placed on her lap. “Give me the plan, and leave it with me and I’ll come up with a proposal.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that,” said Louise, her grip intensifying.

“You can’t expect me to make a decision based on a five-minute read-through.”

“I don’t expect you to make a decision anyway. You’re the one chasing me. But I can’t leave this with you. You have no idea what I had to go through to persuade them to let me take this out of the building. It’s the most confidential of all confidential documents.”

“Fine.”

He took the folder and returned to his desk.

“Take your time. I’m happy to wait,” said Louise, crossing her legs to reveal an expanse of thigh. She followed his eyes down to her legs. “If there’s anything you need to ask me, feel free.”

George started to read, then tapped a couple of times at his keyboard, leafing forwards and backwards through the document. Eventually he turned back to her.

“Some of these additional revenue streams. They’re vague,” he said.

Louise nodded.

“Why? What does ‘miscellaneous and ancillary’ mean?”

“Do I need to spell it out for you?”

“It would be appreciated, yes.”

“I think you should use your imagination. There’s the club itself, but it opens up opportunities for more, er, stimulating revenue generation. And the movement of funds, if you catch my drift.”

He nodded.

“Interesting.”

Another few moments passed.

“There’s no mention of the premises. It’s all very cagey on the specifics. It talks of option A and option B.”

Louise shrugged.

“The building is not confirmed. I told you. Option A is ready to go, but it needs us to move very quickly. With option B we have more time. It’s not as easy and the start would be delayed. The plan covers both. We know where they are, but we can’t risk the deal in case the document is leaked.
